Project Description

FEP Encapsulated O-Ring / PFA Encapsulated O-Ring

With an elastomer core and a jacket of Teflon® fluoropolymer, FEP encapsulated O-ring combine the excellent chemical resistance of PTFE with the elastic behavior of an elastomer. The core is either FKM, Silicone or Stainless Steel. The jacket is FEP or PFA.

APPLICATIONS

FEP encapsulated O-ring is a top choice when a standard O-ring has inadequate chemical resistance for an application and or when a solid PTFE O-ring does not have the elasticity for reliable, long term fluid sealing.

They are often recommended where chemical resistance and or hygiene is required.

Typical applications for encapsulated o-ring include:

  • Flanges

  • Valve Stems

  • Pumps

  • Joints

  • Turbo Expanders

  • Cryogenic seals

Materials for encapsulated o-ring include:

  • Silicone Core- Lowest Cost, Most Readily Available

  • Hollow Silicone Core- Less Force Required to Compress

  • FKM Core- Greater Chemical Resistance and Compression Set Resistance

  • Steel Spring Core- Cryogenic Sealing Applications

Why consider encapsulated o-ring

Very good resistance to nearly all media (exceptions are alkali metals and some fluorine compounds)

Applications in broad range of temperatures

Superbly suited for use in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries

Low contamination

Low permeation

Low coefficient of friction prevents the stick-slip effect

FDA-compliant

Cost-effective, high-performance seal for many critical application areas

Characteristics of FEP and PFA

FEP and PFA are very similar in their characteristics. PFA stands out for its greater thermal resistance at temperatures exceeding 200 °C.

Advantages of FEP encapsulation

  • High resistance to numerous chemicals

  • High corrosion resistance

  • Low compression set

  • Low coefficient of friction

Advantages of PFA encapsulation

  • All the benefits of FEP encapsulation

  • Greater temperature resistance

  • Greater mechanical strength

  • Longer service life

  • Greater cracking resistance
